Othello And The Western Canonical Presentation Of His Race...

Othello and the western canonical presentation of his race, has been reproduced numerous times throughout history. The post-colonial writings of Morrison and Chatterjee tackle how Othello and the presentation of his race are exploited as a form of entertainment. They write back and explore the relationship between Othello’s racial identity and the harm viewing race as a form of entertainment can have culturally in a globalised world. Othello is presented as a story devised by Desdemona in Morrison’s play. He claims ‘[w]hat excited you was my strange story†¦ fantastic adventures, stories of freaks and miracles’ (Morrison and TraoreÃŒ 51) and that she ‘fancied the idea’ (50) where he is reduced to a tale she has devised. He becomes a concept which belongs to Desdemona and like a story, his character, becomes a tool for her entertainment. Othello loses ownership in the presentation of his culture as the perception of his culture becomes her (Western) view. Desdemona’s entertaining fantasy of Othello concerns the exotic. It is presented negatively, as his entertainment value relates to the bizarre being ‘strange [and full of] freaks and miracles’ (51); it echoes the idea of a freak show exploiting abnormalities. The image of ‘the exotic foreigner’ (50) is further developed too by Desdemona’s own view of Othello with his ‘sw ord at his side (50)’. While conversing with Othello she avoids using personal pronouns and engaging the physical man before her to her ownShow MoreRelatedWilliam Shakespeare s Much Ado About Nothing And King Lear3685 Words   |  15 Pagesâ€Å"Much Ado about Nothing† and â€Å"King Lear Introduction Shakespeare is seen to value the role of women as his plays often portray women as heroines. This has been the tradition for women in the Western world and is one that should be spread across all societies in the whole world. The characters that this

Rare Rembrandt Rembrandt as Printmaker Essay Example For Students

Rare Rembrandt Rembrandt as Printmaker Essay Several hundred years after he lived and worked,  Rembrandt  remains a celebrity of single-name status; chances are that several hundred years from now his work will endure while that of, say, Yanni might not. Of  Rembrandt  van Rijns 290 etchings, 85 are currently on view, along with additional prints of the era, at UVMs Fleming Museum. The touring exhibition, Rembrandt  and the Art of Etching, has already been seen by perhaps a million viewers in South America, but Burlington is its only North American stop. Afterwards the works will return to the place where most were created:  Rembrandts own home, now the  Rembrandt  House Museum in Amsterdam. The exhibition offers Vermonters an exclusive opportunity to see many of the 17th-century Dutch masters most important works. Reached by phone in Boston last week,  Rembrandt  House curator Dr. Bob van den Boogert was asked, Why Burlington? his answer was simple: Janie Cohen. The Fleming Museum director is the co-author of Etched on the Memory The Presence of  Rembrandt  in the Prints of Goya and Picasso, and much of her research was done in Amsterdam. Cohen has also contributed writings to the  Rembrandt  House. So bringing this historic collection of etchings to Burlington was a natural choice for her Dutch colleague. Van den Boogert will give a talk on  Rembrandt  at the Fleming this Thursday. The exhibition comprises a wide range of subjects, including at least eight self-portraits. In the earliest,  Rembrandt  was in his twenties. The best-known is probably Self Portrait, Leaning on a Stone Sill from 1639. At 33,  Rembrandt  appears an almost foppish young man, as cocky as DArtagnan from The Three Musketeers. But thats an external view. The artists inner world is what makes the show so intriguing, and the medium of etching provides the perfect platform for viewing it. Rembrandt  sold thousands of copies of etchings in his lifetime, and was probably better known for those works than for his paintings. His technical bag of tricks was second to none, and that virtuosity enabled him to exercise the full range of his expressive powers. Insight into  Rembrandts creative process can been seen in the two states of The Three Crosses presented in this exhibition. Figures have been added and removed between the two states, both created on the same copper plate. He also altered his composition by manipulating light and shadow. Another religious print, Christ Healing the Sick from about 1649, illustrates two technical steps in the etching process. A slick ground was applied to the plate, and that ground was drawn through in a very direct way. When etched, the exposed metal created relatively soft lines to be inked. Then  Rembrandt  cleaned and dried the plate before scratching contrasting lines directly into the metal to add finer details to areas such as hands, toes and clothing. Christ Healing the Sick is arguably  Rembrandts most famous etching, and it figures prominently in the artists lore. It is also known as the Hundred Guilder Print, and several explanations have been proffered for that curious moniker. In 1755 a French art dealer said that  Rembrandt  traded an impression of it for an Italian print worth 100 guilders. Another unlikely story is that  Rembrandt  repurchased a copy of the print for that exorbitant sum. Recent scholarship has unearthed a 1654 letter to the bishop of Bruges from a contemporary artist that  Rembrandts prints had sold for 100 guilders on several occasions. That kind of popularity made him a wealthy man, at least for awhile. The Shell (Cornus Marmoreus) of 1650 suggests one reason  Rembrandt  went bankrupt in 1658. Van den Boogert explains that something as exotic as a Cornus Marmoreus shell would have cost the price of a house in Amsterdam. It was practically a 17th-century moon rock, and The Shell   Rembrandts only etching still life was drawn from a specimen in his extensive collection of baubles and fine art. He had also gotten into the almost-unheard-of habit of creating prints for his own enjoyment rather than specifically for sale. The Shell and The Hundred Guilder Print may have been such works. .ud3b16866a5186c774d00b5dd391fce1d , .ud3b16866a5186c774d00b5dd391fce1d .postImageUrl , .ud3b16866a5186c774d00b5dd391fce1d .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ud3b16866a5186c774d00b5dd391fce1d , .ud3b16866a5186c774d00b5dd391fce1d:hover , .ud3b16866a5186c774d00b5dd391fce1d:visited , .ud3b16866a5186c774d00b5dd391fce1d:active { border:0!important; } .ud3b16866a5186c774d00b5dd391fce1d .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ud3b16866a5186c774d00b5dd391fce1d { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ud3b16866a5186c774d00b5dd391fce1d:active , .ud3b16866a5186c774d00b5dd391fce1d:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ud3b16866a5186c774d00b5dd391fce1d .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ud3b16866a5186c774d00b5dd391fce1d .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ud3b16866a5186c774d00b5dd391fce1d .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ud3b16866a5186c774d00b5dd391fce1d .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ud3b16866a5186c774d00b5dd391fce1d:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ud3b16866a5186c774d00b5dd391fce1d .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ud3b16866a5186c774d00b5dd391fce1d .ud3b16866a5186c774d00b5dd391fce1d-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ud3b16866a5186c774d00b5dd391fce1d:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Rembrandt EssayEvery piece in this exhibition is notable, but one of the most fascinating is the 1652 print called Faust in most sources. Goethe popularized the story of Dr. Faustus 150 years after  Rembrandts death, so, as van den Boogert suggests, that identification is not undisputed. The alternative title, Practicing Alchemist, is probably more accurate. Either way, the print may indicate that  Rembrandt  had an interest in Jewish mysticism. His opulent Great Jewish Bride print of 1635 appeared one year after his own marriage, and many of his closest friends and patrons were Jews.  Rembrandt  and his wife Saskia also lived in Amsterdams vibrant Jewish quarter . Only one print, a commissioned portrait, is known to have been produced between 1660 and the artists death in October 1669. Like many of his late works, the self-portraits of his final years were moody and introspective. This can be seen in his self-portrait from age 42, in which the artist holds an etching needle to assiduously trace his own aging features. He is wearing plainer clothes than in younger years, and sits in a dark room with only one light source an open window to his right. That  Rembrandt  is the man who became immortal.

Porn On Internet Essays - Effects Of Pornography, Pornography

Porn On Internet Why is the Internet so enticing for pedophiles? " It's created easily accessible stimulation for child molesters. Anybody can download pictures in complete anonymity. They do not have to make any kind of human contact" (Trebilcock 102). There may be definitions to describe pornography, but they do not truly examine the destruction, degradation, and the pathetic nature of the concept. The word pornography is more destructive than one might believe. It would fit perfectly into Sonia Maasik and Jack Solomon's essay entitles "Cheap Thrills". The essay talks about the influencing images of music, video and television. The computer is becoming more and more influencing because of the internet these days. The problem with this type of material today is it is assessable on every computer that is connected on-line to the Internet. Pornography should be eliminated on the Internet so that impressionable individuals can not access the degrading material. Al Gore says" Some say that we should refrain from action, that all action to block children's access to objectable content amounts to censorship. To them I say, blocking your child's access to objectionable Internet content is not censoring that's called parenting"( Simons B10). Eliminating pornography on the net will help to decrease the large amount of pornography users, which will decrease crime. Dr. Victor Cline, from the University of Utah, conducted a study regarding serial murders and rapists. He observed users developing a four-step pattern with pornography. The first step in his study was the addiction. The serial murders and rapist claimed that at first they become addicted to the material. Dr. Cline's study didn't stop there. The serial murderers and rapists claimed to continue on with their addiction. They increased to the next step of Dr. Cline's observed patterns. The use of pornography material escalated. They felt as if they needed more and more pornography with hard core material to meet their needs. Becoming indifferent to others was the third stage. The serial murderers and rapists felt after becoming addicted and escalating their habits, they needed to desensitize. This is when they stopped caring about others. As long as their needs were fulfilled they felt that no harm was done. They were the only innocence in the picture. The last step in Dr. Cline's observation was the actualization, which is the acting out what he/she saw regarding pornography. This is the final stage that serial murderers and rapists concluded themselves in this four-stage process. Therefore, this is the end for innocent adults, children, and animals to get hurt. Pulling all pornography from the Internet will allow fewer people to have access to the degrading material. This is the material that is a common character trait among serial murderers and rapists, which are a belief, held by Dr. Calvin. These four steps of Dr. Calvin's need to be prevented by us the users of the Internet and the people of the world. We need to take it off the Internet now before it gets any worse. Years ago people believed if pornography was to be legalized, the demand for the material would decrease. Now with the experience and technology today, the demand for the material is increasing. A study was directed in many cities with"de facto legalization." The results of this study concluded men becoming addicted to the pornography material and then demanding more. This study also determined, in the last two decades, the number of rapes and child sexual abuse has increased tremendously due to the men who are acting out their desires. This material is like a deadly weapon. It encourages one to strike a gun when they have it in their hand. Then the criminal uses it as an excuse to react on the topic. It was resolved in this study that when pornography addicts become"bored" with a certain type of material, they continue on to much harder material. Material that consumes much more than they have previously observed. They want the hard core pornography. They want it all and this is where the situation becomes a problem. With these two studies from "Is it Pornography" article, the conclusions were both acted out as a result. When a person consumes hard core pornography, this is when most of the violent crimes occur. We must not allow this degrading material to destroy our people, futures and world. People need to realize the damage pornography does and stop it now. "Pornography is illegal for the same reason crack cocaine, steroids, and heroin are illegal. People's lives are consumed and often destroyed by it and those who

Requesting a Reference Letter Years After Graduating

Requesting a Reference Letter Years After Graduating Its a common question. In fact, my students ask about this even before they graduate. In the words of one reader: Ive been out of school for two years now but am now applying to grad school. I have been teaching English abroad for the past two years so I dont have the opportunity to meet with any of my former professors in person and to be honest I never really cultivated a deep relationship with any of them. I want to send an email to my former academic major adviser to see if she can write a letter for me. I knew her through all of college and took two classes with her including a very small seminar class. I think of all my professors she knows me the best. How should I approach the situation? The faculty is used to being approached by former students who request letters. Its not unusual, so dont fear. The way in which you make contact is important. Your goal is to reintroduce yourself, remind the faculty member of your work as a student, fill her in on your current work, and request a letter. Personally, I find an email to be best because it permits the professor to stop and look up your records - grades, transcript, and so on before replying. What should your email say? Keep it short. For example, consider the following email: Dear Dr. Advisor,My name is X. I graduated from MyOld University two years ago. I was a Psychology major and you were my advisor. In addition, I was in your Applied Basketball class in Fall 2000, and Applied Basketball II in Spring 2002. Since graduating I have been teaching English in X country. I am planning on returning to the US soon and am applying for graduate study in Psychology, specifically, PhD programs in Subspecialty. Im writing to ask if you would consider writing a letter of recommendation on my behalf. I am not in the US so cannot visit you in person, but perhaps we could schedule a phone call to catch up and so I can seek your guidance.Sincerely,Student Offer to send copies of old papers, if you have them. When you confer with the professor, ask whether the professor feels that she can write a helpful letter on your behalf. It may feel awkward on your part but rest assured that this is not an unusual situation. Good luck!

Critical review a paper concerned with change Essay

Critical review a paper concerned with change - Essay Example The case study focuses on the beer distribution system and the structural inertia as a result of a long serving CEO. The case study also dwelled on the problems encountered in the company as a result of subsequent CEO successions and how these problems affected different levels of management. Organizational change is introduced so as to move the organization from the current state to a desirable state (Ragsdell, 2000). This can be achieved in several ways such as radical change and incremental change. The interaction between these two models can be evaluated using the punctuated equilibrium model of change. This is helpful for identifying two shapes of organizational change and elaborating on the link between these shapes. It also helps identify the role played by the top and middle management in implementing the two types of organizational change. A case study of Heineken can be used to illustrate the shapes of organizational change and the application of the punctuated equilibrium model. The company is ideal for identifying the factors determining a particular shape of organizational change. The research method was a case study of the Dutch beer brewing company. However, the findings of the case study cannot be generally valid since the research did not provide any general results. Further research is necessary before the findings can be extended to other companies in other industries. Heineken was selected due to the long history that is well documented with numerous sources of information regarding the company. On the other hand, the long history means that the company has dealt with several challenges of organizational change. The available sources have detailed information regarding the challenges experienced by Heineken when dealing with organizational change. In the late 1980s, the CEO of the company was changed, which had a large impact on the organization. Therefore, the choice of the case study was ideal since there were several journals and reviews that provide information about the company. The levels and changes in management make it easy to apply the punctuated equilibrium model of organizational change. Tushman and Romanelli (1985) developed the punctuated equilibrium model that proposes an interaction between incremental and radical organizational change. They argue that convergent periods experienced in an organization cause reorientation that demarks and sets the bearing for the coming convergent period. Long time spans of incremental change are referred to as convergent periods, and short periods of radical and discontinuous change are called reorientations. Organization change occurs in five domains: organization culture, structure, strategy, power distribution, and control systems (Romanelli and Tushman, 1994). These domains are central to activities of the organization and important for its survival. Activity domains interact in different levels of performance and inertia, which are the basic factors for organizatio nal change. Inconsistent activities lead to low performance and organizational failure. High performance is achieved when activities are consistent and coupled to each other. Although the punctuated equilibrium model suggests a distinction between radical and incremental change, Stace and Dunphy (1996) propose four types of change. The first type is fine tuning where change is a continuous process characterized by a match between strategy, structure, processes, and people. The second type is incremental

Marketing Study on Apple Company Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 5500 words

Marketing Study on Apple Company - Assignment Example The computer industry incorporates a broad range of products, from mp3 players / iPods and printers to â€Å"personal computers and powerful servers† (Linzmayer, 2004, P. 103). Businesses have difficulty working in the computer industry, specifically because of the active environment of technology. In accordance to Moore’s law, the â€Å"numbers of transistors per square inch on integrated circuits will double every 18 months† (Linzmayer, 2004, P. 103), and costs will be decreased. This indicates that even the leading companies are required to stay very active and updated, as the industry is persistently changing and redefining its parameters. Apple Inc. has lately made headlines by penetrating into the cell phone market with its launch of the Apple iPhone. Apple as well has an extensive range of computer products together with personal computers, â€Å"computer accessories, servers, networking solutions, and software packages† (Linzmayer, 2004, P. 103). Presently having a market share of 58 percent among the cell phone market, and staying on a profitable 5 percent of the personal computer market, Apple has constantly maintains its name within the industry by keeping an eye for aesthetics as well as inventiveness, together with ‘easy to use’, pioneering products. Apple has the maximum gross profit margin among its rivals because of its higher costs, and is only in charge for letting Apple to stay afloat within the personal computer market by a meager 4 percent market share. On the other hand, â€Å"Apple’s spare no expense philosophy in producing high quality differentiated goods drastically reduces its ability to translate a larger portion of gross prof it into net profit† (Cruikshank, 2005, p. 72). Apple has the utmost operating expense ratio in addition to the lowest net profit margin with its rivals. If Apple is capable of cutting down on operating cost and make use of a few of the standard policies used by Dell, they will be capable of converting additional profits into earnings per share Apple has many internal strong pints that make it a triumphant as well as competitive business. Apple has a dominant foothold within the personal computer marketplace by being different with its pioneering approach and user-friendliness. Its operating system is created domestically, keeping it free from
